We Shall Return | Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie

14.09 | 21:00

Ερμηνεία: Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie, Αlison Duarte, Tom Pham, Sergio Debevere

The piece is danced by myself (Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie, Choreographer) and 3 other dancers whom I have chosen based on their individual skills. Each of them has some kind of skill that I am interested in and wanted to use in the piece. The piece is now about 20 minutes long and it is a crossover between Hip Hop and contemporary but It also inncludes partnering, acrobatics, floor work, Martial arts, to name a few. I started the research by finding information about the cultures and history from the dancers. That’s how I came up with the theme of colonization. I find that it is something we can all relate to that happened in history from either being part of the side of the oppressed or the oppressors. I try to give Images that come to my mind when I think about this topic, like war, manipulation, integration, hope, freedom etc.

My name is Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie, I was raised in Paramaribo, Suriname, born the 8th of August 1990. I am an experimental urban dancer who is individualistic and I am known for my own style of dancing. I was studying pedagogical sciences and education at the “Anton the Kom University of Suriname”. I am a self-made dancer and I mainly use the styles breaking and popping but also all other influences that inspire me. In October 2014 I enrolled at the “Fontys high school of the arts” the Contemporary Urban department. Since I am in the Netherlands I have come in contact with a lot more different styles, people, information and inspiration. I am focusing a lot more on how I can develop myself as a dancer, performer, and choreographer in the best possible way. I made a few short solos and I am working on my own piece for next year. I auditioned for “DOX” and worked with the choreographers “Elvis Sebiko” from the “Black Roots foundation” and “Giovanni Vreede”. Other choreographers that I have worked with are “Blenard Azizaj” (a dancer from Akram Khan Dance Company) “Stephan Aspinall” ,”Sarah Prescimone”, “Joshua Trebi”, “Tony Vezich”, “Tony Adigun”, “Kalpana Raghuraman”, “Shailesh Bahoran”, “Sheyda Darap”, “Eric Kaiel”.
